The Day After The Election

Wednesday, May 20, 2009, the people and state of California will be in an unprecedented situtation.

Student and youth leaders need to be prepared for the day after the election and beyond to advocate the importance of education and the need to increase investment in education.

Timeline of News

May 19, 2009: With 24.2% (4,207 of 17,393) precincts reporting, Props 1A-1E ~40/60 NO and Props 1F is ~75/25 YES. http://tinyurl.com/ca5192009

May 7, 2009: Legislative Analyst's Office published a report finding that: While the February budget package eased the state’s cash flow crunch considerably, the budget and cash pressures of recent months have taken their toll. The General Fund’s “cash cushion”—the monies available to pay state bills at any given time—currently is projected to end 2008–09 at a much lower level than normal. Without additional legislative measures to address the state’s fiscal difficulties or unprecedented amounts of borrowing from the short–term credit markets, the state will not be able to pay many of its bills on time for much of its 2009–10 fiscal year.

May 7, 2009: Public Policy Institute of California released a statewide survey finding that: Five of the six propositions on the May special election ballot are trailing among likely voters

April 29, 2009: Field Poll released a poll finding that: Voter sentiment running against five of six budget propositions on May 19 ballot. Majorities skeptical that Prop. 1A will achieve its goals. Many voters confused about the impact that Props. 1D and 1E will have on health-related budgets.
